The signature has been an indispensible part of of the world commerce framework for centuries, and it still is, but in a new form.

At the dawn of civilization, agreements were confirmed by a handshake, or whatever the equivalent was at the time. There was no written record of agreements, because of course writing had not been invented yet. As we all know, the problem with handshake agreements is that sometimes a party to the agreement, or even a witness, can suffer a memory lapse, and claim that the agreement was never made.This would leave the other party to the agreement with little recourse that didn't involve clubs or spears. The invention of writing was an enormous boon to commerce. Records of agreements and transactions could now be made. The problem of authenticating agreements remained however. A written record of an agreement could be made, but there was no means of recording the assent of the parties involved that could not be repudiated, or authenticating, of agreements, so it was often necessary to refresh the memory of a party to an agreement by means of spears or swords. The invention of signatures changed all that. Over time, the signature evolved from a unique seal possessed only by the signer imprinted in a clay tablet or wax, and with the invention of paper, to the signature that we know today - a handwritten representation of a person's name, or a unique scrawl, commonly written with a pen. For the most part, this means of agreement authentication has served very well during the long era of paper documents and has a cornerstone facilitating the advancement of commerce for centuries. Now, in the 21st century, the era of paper documents is drawing to a close, being replaced by the era of electronic documents. Private keys are so long and complex that they must be written down or stored, making them vulnerable to theft. - It is confusing to users. It is shrouded in complex technical jargon and is incomprehensible for a layman. - Reliance on a third party Certificate Authority. If (when) the certificate authority goes out of business, the digital signature can no longer be verified. - Expensive subscription fees must be paid for the service of the certificate authority, otherwise the signature become unverifiable. Due to the above shortcomings, PKI schemes have failed to meet the need of e-commerce for a good authentication method. Fortunately for the continued development of e-commerce, a traditional solution to a modern problem has emerged.
